Smitherman Backs Selling Off Some City Services

In a sit down with the Toronto Star, mayoral frontrunner George Smitherman indicated he would give “careful consideration” to the idea of contracting out some of the city services currently provided by unionized employees:

“[T]he two places where big dollars are spent and where outsourcing are going to be most prevalent are garbage and also with respect to the operations of the Toronto Transit Commission,” said Smitherman.

“If you say outsourcing and you say the TTC, what do they do? They buy buses and they run them up and down routes for the collection of a fare. In lots of places, in London (England), there are different service delivery options which, taken together, provide a comprehensive service to the residents of greater London.”
