Heaps Legal Payout Remains Hot Issue

The ongoing issue of the $65,000 payout to cover Councillor Adrian Heaps’ legal fees remains a hot topic of conversation at Toronto City Council.   First, Councillor Doug Holyday has filed a lawsuit against his colleagues on the issue, claiming they have “overstepped their authority” in covering Heaps’ legal fees:

“I think this is a clear situation where they’ve overstepped their bounds,” he said. “This is a wake-up call to the voters, and I think once this takes place maybe the voters will pay a bit more attention to what’s going on” at city hall.

“I think the judge will help the voters see in a clearer way what the problem is down there.”

“Toronto city councillors could have the chance to dig themselves out of heaps of legal trouble next week.

If two-thirds of city council approves it, councillors would vote Tuesday on a motion from Councillors Cliff Jenkins and Michael Thompson that would reopen the decision to reimburse Councillor Adrian Heaps for a defamation suit.

The decision launched a lawsuit from a group of Toronto residents alleging that 23 city councillors broke the law when they voted to give Heaps taxpayers’ dollars to cover legal bills.”
